We had the opportunity to stay overnight in a Lookout Cabin this past weekend. The Forrest Service rents out these old cabins that were used to watch for fires. It was definitely small and rustic. It was quite the rocky hill to get up to the cabin.

All the walls were windows, but sadly two sides were covered with storm shutters so we didn't have the full panoramic view from inside the cabin. But we assumed they were there for good reason. We enjoyed watching a few storms blow through. It was pretty cool to see way up on our hill.

The cabin came with two bunk beds with thin pads on them. We brought our sleeping bags and pillows.

It had a cute little propane stove/oven to use and kitchen neccessities in the cupboards. Our favorite part of course was the little wood stove. It made our chilly day/night cozy warm. It was quite nostalgic listening to the storm blowing outside and us being warm and cozy inside.

The first day we got up there it was pretty wet and stormy so we played games inside. We played Twister and Hiss(you piece together snakes).

The two things Gage enjoyed the most was chopping wood(he kept begging Dad to go back out and chop more) and chopping rocks(with a splitting maul) and throwing rocks. While Gage and Jared were getting their thrills throwing rocks and watching them shatter I heard Jared say "I don't know why I ever wanted a girl". They were having so much fun doing typical boy things and Jared was loving the fact that Gage found it just as fun as he did.

Gage was thrilled to use his binoculars to see our beautiful view. This is the view that was out the front door. Jared is getting the coordinates. Here they are if you want to see it. It just looks all blurry to me, but Jared thinks it's cool.

Our final thing before we left was to roast hotdogs. Gage was so sad to leave. You should have seen the saddness on his face. He was sure we would stay a lot longer. Never leaving would have been preferable. We really did enjoy ourselves. It was so fun to see Gage(and his daddy- two peas in a pod!) enjoy himself so much.

I forgot to mention something very important. The outhouse was a very long 50 yards away down the bottom of the hill. Yes, not so fun!

That looks like so much fun! I'm jealous cuz that would be my favorite kind of camping... in a house :-).
I like to shatter shale too. It's not just a boy thing.
What a great idea and with those windows around it must have been awesome. Is it something you will do again?
What a fun adventure! You guys are always thinking of fun things to do.
So you have me wondering...Do you still have an apartment? Seems you have become vagabonds, wondering around to several different places to lay your heads:)
You guys always seem to find good adventures!
I remembering reading that you could rent those. How fun! My grandpa used to live in one of those all alone (until he got married and started having kids and realized he didn't want to be so far away from them). You were so prepared for any weather too.
I'll have to have Will take a look at this-- I'm sure he will want to go rent one right away! Glad you had fun.
